Startling Benefits Of Weighted Blankets For Kids

Startling Benefits Of Weighted Blankets For Kids

Weighted blankets seem to be the new wave today but, what are the benefits of weighted blankets for kids? Do weighted blankets work or is it just another version of snake oil?

Toddler Sleeping

I will start out by saying that research has proven weighted blankets do work. That being said, think about yourself in the wintertime.

Do have several blankets on your bed that you sleep under? Do you like the feel of the weight above you?

This might be too much information but I personally like the feeling of lifting the covers with my feet and letting the blankets slowly come down to rest on me.

I get a sudden sense of security. See the truth is we have been using a version of weighted blankets for years. Not only does it keep you all snuggly but weighted blankets have added benefits as well.

So it has been proven scientifically that weighted blankets help kids and adults sleep better.

Reduce Stress

Believe it or not, kids have stress just like adults. The problems that cause toddlers to stress are sometimes different but, it is still stress.

A weighted blanket can calm your toddler thru a process called deep touch pressure stimulation.

Studies have shown this type of stimulation lowers stress hormone levels and aids in the production of serotonin.

So in lamins terms, a weighted blanket can have the same effect on your body like a hug.

It is interesting to note that the serotonin that is released naturally converts to melatonin.

Helps With ADHD

Child Jumping

Childhood ADHD is becoming more and more popular these days.

Is it because we are getting better at diagnosing or are we overusing the term without thinking of the adverse effects later in life?

Without creating a major outcry I will leave this here and you can make your own decision on that.

However, studies have shown that the use of weighted blankets and or weighted vests can help your child stay on task longer and also calm hyperactivity.

Sleep Better

Since your body responds to deep touch pressure and this deep touch pressure helps release serotonin which converts to melatonin.

Weighted blankets naturally produce a sleep experience. Melatonin is sold in many stores and in many forms.

It also can be produced naturally in you and your toddler by sunlight and deep touch pressure.

So instead of melatonin as a supplement try creating melatonin the natural way through a weighted blanket.

Natural Sleep Aid

Child Sleeping

As I have already mentioned above a weighted blanket for kids is a great natural sleep aid.

Mixed with a healthy balanced diet the use of weighted blankets could the perfect combination for a better night’s sleep in your toddler.

It has been proven that a good night’s sleep is very critical to your toddler’s overall development. I would like to share that my grandson sleeps better with a weighted blanket.

Before I started using a weighted blanket he would toss and turn all night now he sleeps more soundly and seems better rested in the morning.

What Weight Do I Need?

Most studies have shown that a blanket of at least 10% plus 1 to 2 pounds of your child’s body weight will give your child just the right amount of pressure touch stimulation.

For example, if your toddler weighs 30 pounds a blanket that weighs 3 to 5 pounds will work just fine.

Keep in mind that even though this is what the studies recommend you might need to go a little heavy or lighter depending on your child’s response to the weight.

Final Thoughts

So hopefully I have shed some light on the use of weighted blankets for kids.

After using one on my grandson, I have noticed a vast difference in his sleep training. There are many benefits to using weighted blankets as I have stated.

This may not be a complete list of benefits and I am sure if you dig around a bit you will find someone with a negative experience with the use of a weighted blanket.

However, the best part of this type of therapy is the fact that it is not a drug or a pill. My goal was to provide value to help with your child’s sleep.

  1. I wonder what we did back in the 60s before weighted blankets?  The truth is though, in the winter, I use several comforters. The weight of the comforters keep me feeling safe and secure. I wonder though, how do the manufacturers determine how much weight to put in the blanket?

    • That is a good question. There have been lots of studies on sleep for children. That is how they have determined the best weight. You know back in the 60’s it was ok to rub some bourbon on a child’s gum and they would go to sleep LOL So I have been told. Thanks for reading I enjoyed your comments

  2. Great article on the benefits of weighted blankets for kids.  I love my weighted blanket. I feel like I can sleep so much better so I’m sure they are great for kids. And its also good to know it can help with stress. Thank you for this great info!

Do they make small kid sized weighted blankets?

    • Thank you for your comment. They do make small sizes. My 3 yr old grandson has one that weighs about 5 pounds

He seems to sleep better with it.

  3. What a wonderful insight on the benefits of a weighted blanket. Im a huge fan of blankets especially for kids. I enjoy sewing and I have been making children’s blankets forever. 25yrs or so. All my kids, my grandkids, friends, and other family members through the years. I never knew about the benefits of weighted blankets so I’m very pleased that I have through the years been making therapeutic blankets this whole time. Thank you, Cori

  4. I have always chosen heavier cotton knit and quilted blankets and couldn’t imagine how anyone could sleep without these layers on top of them.  When I first heard of weighted blankets, I realized this is what I had been doing my whole life!  It gives a sense of security.  Thank you for this informative article as many children will benefit from the blankets!

  5. Totally agree with your advice on weighted blankets for children and adults alike. For me when I was growing up, I liked to be tucked in tight to feel snug, secure and warm.  Later on as a teenager, I was privileged to obtain a duvet which was all the rage at the time, but I struggled to feel the same snugness, security and warmth as I did with sheet and blankets and a bedspread.  Even today as an adult, I much prefer the weight of linen on me than light duvets.  Thank you for sharing this info with us, I hugely endorse your recommendations and trust that someone else benefits from your post.

  6. I was lucky because my Daughter had no problems with sleeping right from when we bought her home from the hospital. I know that weighted blankets work well though, I have suffered from insomnia in the past and a weighted blanket was one of the suggestions I was told to try, yes it does work.

I can see how this would benefit a baby as well.

  7. Hey Chuck!

Your article is very interesting! It makes a lot of sense. It’s similar to those Thundershirts for dogs that help them not feel anxious. And you are right about feeling comfortable and secure under a lot of blankets. It’s something I look forward to when I get in bed at night… especially when it’s cold.

I was intriqued with the study about how the weighted blankets produce serotonin. It is a much better solution than giving your child a bunch of pills!

    Thanks for Sharing!

    • Hi there, thanks for reading and your comment. I agree I don’t particularly believe in giving a child pills if it can be avoided.
