KidKraft Airplane Toddler Bed for Kids – Review

When my grandson turned 2, My daughter and I felt like it was time to transition him from his crib to a toddler bed. So, we searched for a bed for kids that would be an easy transition. We decided on the KidKraft Airplane Toddler Bed. Since it was designed to hold a crib mattress we felt this would be a great transition from a crib to a toddler bed.

My Grandson loves this bed. He was so excited, that he tried to help us put it together the day it came in the mail. I did not ask, but I’m sure the UPS man wasn’t as excited as Mason was. It arrived in a large heavy box that weighed over 70 pounds.

Once the box was in the house, we started the process of unpacking its contents. Using the words “some assembly required” is an understatement. However, I will say that the instructions were very detailed and easy to follow.

The Assembly Process

This kit has quite a few screws and hardware that come with the bed. Keep in mind that assembly for this bed for kids will take a couple of hours. I also recommend having a second pair of hands available during the assembly process. Allow extra time if your toddler helps.

One problem to note, the dowels for the wings are not explained very well in the assembly drawings as shown below. That is to say, on the first attempt to assemble we ended up with the wings upside down.

The dowels are cut at an angle. However, if you turn them they will fit into place. The dowels only fit one way. So, once you get past the 2 wings you are on your way to a smooth assembly.

The Pros

Ok, so the storage space that is located in the footboard is an extra bonus. Even though, it is not large enough to be a toy box, so to speak. Consequently, it does hold all the toys that my grandson likes to play with in bed.

Certainly, this is a great transition bed for kids. That is to say, the crib mattress fits with no issues.

My grandson enjoys the manual spinning propeller on the front, I have watched him sit on the top of the storage lid and pretend he is taking off on an awesome adventure.

The Cons

I have noticed that the bed is very sturdy and seems to hold up very well to the abuse a toddler can dish out. Mason has jumped, pulled, moved around, and even used as a launchpad for his cars. However, the propeller did break as he was pulling on it. As a result, I have needed to glue it back together several times.

Being that the bed is 45 1/4 inches wide, It does take up a bit of space in the bedroom. But, you can leave one side of the wings off and the bed will fit next to a wall.

I highly recommend adding side rails to this bed for kids. For example, the first couple of nights that Mason slept in the bed he ended up rolling out of it several times. Once we installed the side rails problem solved.

Final Thought

Now that Mason is 3 he has slept in this bed for a little over a year. And, we have noticed it is time to move him into a larger bed. He no longer likes to sleep in this bed. Although, it might have something to do with him sleeping in my king size bed a couple of times. I will keep you updated on that situation as it continues to evolve.

Consequently, the bed is only a transition bed for kids. It is designed to allow your toddler to escape the confounds of the crib and enjoy a bed he can get into easily. That is to say, my opinion is that about 3 years of age you will be looking for a larger bed just as we are.

Great Buy

I feel like this is a great buy for a young child that is ready to get out on his own. That is to say, out of his crib. I think your child will enjoy dreaming of magical places he can fly off to.

I hope you have enjoyed this review and if you have any questions about the KidKraft Airplane Toddler Bed for kids, or want to leave your own personal review, leave a comment.
