10 Amazing Tips On How To Sleep Well When Your Toddler Doesn’t
Tips on how to sleep well when your toddler doesn’t. Is that really a thing? To me, sleep seems impossible or very limited now that I have a toddler running around.
If your toddler is anything like my three-year-old grandson he is always trying to sleep in my bed at night. Do you have this problem? In my case, it is a nightly battle.
So if you have been following me you know that I am trying to sleep train, my grandson. Like most parents, this has not been an easy task.
However, one thing I noticed was my quality of sleep has gone downhill the older Mason gets. He invents ways to stay up later every night. As well as, reasons to sleep in my bed.
Therefore, my goal is to get to sleep as fast as I can once I actually go to bed.
Recently, I was finally able to get him sleeping in the bed that I built for him. But now I have to deal with him waking up in the middle of the night or very early in the morning as he wants to crawl in bed with me.
If this has happened to you you know what I’m dealing with.
So have researched some tips that seem to help with my quality of sleep and hopefully some of these tips will work for you. I will be completely honest and say not all of these work for me. Just because I am not willing to change a few things.
Stick to the Schedule
Creating a schedule for your toddler is very important. But, it is just as important for you to create a schedule for yourself to sleep well at night.
I realize that after your toddler goes down for the night, it is now your time. It is time to relax and get somethings done around the house. Or perhaps catch up on your favorite sitcom.
However, by setting an earlier bedtime for yourself you will find some extra zzz’s before your toddler wakes up.
I know this going to sound obvious, but your toddler is only going to get between 10 -12 hours of sleep each night. So, if he goes down at 7 pm it is natural for him to wake up around 6 am.
In this particular case, if you go to sleep at 9 pm you will get your 8hours of sleep. That sounds good but we both know that that is not going to happen. The key is to find a happy medium to increase your sleep time.
Choose a Pillow
So, you have adjusted your sleep time but now it is hard to fall right to sleep. Another tip on how to sleep well is to choose a pillow that fits your body.
That is to say, some pillows are flat and some are fat. The key to the perfect pillow is choosing one that keeps your body in alignment.
For example, according to WebMD, if sleep on your side, choose a pillow that aligns your nose up with the center of your body. Also, while resting on your back you want to support the natural curve of your neck.
I personally was sleeping with two pillows at night and I didn’t realize how much strain that was adding to my neck until I found one pillow that was perfect. I currently use a memory foam pillow and it has greatly improved my quality of sleep.
Set the Mood
In Today’s world, it seems like the bedroom has become the main room in the house aside from the kitchen. I mean really it’s the most comfortable room in the house right.
What is better than laying in bed watching TV with a glass of wine while you unwind for the day. Well, I am about to spoil your mood.
By lowering the light and using the bedroom for what it is intended for you will find your sleep quality improving. Wait a minute, what?
Use your bedroom for sex and sleep, leave the TV in the Family room. You will soon find that you can fall asleep easier and faster.
Therefore allowing you to catch up your sleep to your toddlers.
Caffeine is found in many products other than coffee.
In fact, it is even found in some common medications.
Instead of listing each one if have included a chart from sleep.org to help you see how much caffeine you might be consuming at night.
As I said earlier, my goal is to fall asleep as fast as possible by eliminated my caffeine intake past 6 pm I’m able to fall asleep more quickly at night.
This is one of the tips on how to sleep well that has been most effective for me personally.
Create some background noise
My second favorite tip on how to sleep well is to create some background noise. By creating background noise you can drown out the neighbor’s dogs that bark all night, the A/C or heat turning off and on all night, and cars passing by.
Think about it for a minute, have you ever woke up at night to hear the A/C running. I used to think it ran all night because it seemed like every time I woke up I heard it running.
Believe it or not, it worried me to the point of not being able to fall back to sleep quickly because I would start thinking of the electric bill. Turns out it was waking me up and not running as much as I thought.
Once I added the background or white noise to my sleep habits I no longer wake up to suttle everyday noises. I have found that the Amazon Echo works perfectly for this task.
I recommend still using a baby monitor so you can hear your toddler over the white noise if needed. You can find my pick for the best baby monitor here
Limit your bed partners
As much as you would probably want to sometimes, it is not a good idea to kick your spouse out of your bed. However, your dogs and or cats might be causing you not to sleep as soundly as you would like.
By training your pets to sleep in their own bed your quality of sleep should improve. Now if you remember at the beginning I stated I don’t follow all of these tips on how to sleep well.
This in particular. I allow one of my dogs to sleep with me. Only because they don’t like each other and refuse to sleep together. Otherwise, both would be in my bed. In my defense,
I am single and have a large bed. They generally do not move once they get in my bed. However, if you and your partner are in the same bed your pet will take up space in between you which will hamper your sleep.
Leave the work behind
One of the things I enjoy most besides my grandson is working from home. but, the bad part is walking away from work at bedtime.
Now you may leave the house each day to work. That being said, how many times have you laid awake in bed thinking about something that happened at work the day before.
Or, perhaps you have a deadline coming up and you can’t stop thinking about it. We have all been there. Work will interfere with the quality of your sleep if you allow it.
Try reading a good non-fiction book to relax and forget work for the night. After all, what do you accomplish by lying awake worrying about something you can not fix at the moment.
Blue Light Special
You may not be aware but your Television, computer, and cell phone emit blue light which affects your circadian rhythm. basically tricking your brain into thinking it is still daylight.
Therefore reducing the amount of melatonin your body produces.
It is recommended to cut out the blue light around 2 hours before bed each night.
The perfect Temperature
A comfortable room temperature makes for a comfortable bed. Think about those cool nights and being snuggled under the covers. Isn’t that a great comfort?
By setting the temperature in your room between 68 and 72 degrees you will create the perfect environment to induce sleep.
By utilizing the same technique for your toddler he will sleep comfortably as well.
Bath Time is Not Just For Kids
There is nothing more relaxing than a warm bath and a glass of red wine. Even though alcohol can hamper your quality of sleep, it is still relaxing to have a glass now and then.
And, coupled with a warm bath just before bed you will find yourself very relaxed at bedtime. It is recommended to take your bath 90 minutes before bedtime.
If you don’t have time or don’t feel like a bath simply soaking your feet in hot water will provide somewhat of the same effect.
As you can tell I have mentioned many tips on how to sleep well with your toddlers. Not everything will work. But if some of these tips allow you to get some extra sleep while you are sleep training your toddler then it is time well spent.
It seems like everything is so hectic these days that you can’t relax anymore. So maybe if we just slow down a bit and focus on ourselves occasionally then you can get through the next day a little easier.
